Role Overview

This is a hands-on mechanical engineering role focused on thermal management, structural analysis, and field-deployable hardware for defense-grade systems. The ideal candidate will bring experience in mechanical simulation, vibration and shock testing, thermal system optimization, and prototype fabrication. The role spans early-stage design through manufacturing readiness, with a strong emphasis on iterative testing in harsh conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop thermal management solutions (active and passive) for high-power modules
• Run conjugate heat transfer simulations and transient thermal analyses to validate performance
• Perform FEA simulations for stress, vibration, modal, and impact response
• Use tools like ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation to optimize for strength, weight, and field durability
• Design components and assemblies in CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.)
• Rapidly prototype hardware using CNC machining, additive manufacturing, or other fabrication methods
• Plan and execute vibration, shock, and environmental tests to validate field-worthiness
• Build and deploy test rigs to simulate real-world deployment environments
• Conduct DFM reviews to ensure components are production-ready and cost-effective
• Select appropriate materials and tolerances for scalable production with external vendors
• Analyze metals, polymers, and composites for strength, EMI compatibility, and thermal conductivity
• Plan mechanical and environmental qualification tests as needed
• Generate BOMs, GD&T drawings, and assembly documentation
• Support prototype-to-production handoff with clear, test-validated deliverables
• Work closely with electrical, firmware, optical, and control teams to ensure full-system integration
• Support assembly, alignment, and testing in lab and field environments

Qualifications

• 28 years of experience in mechanical, aerospace, or hardware engineering (defense or ruggedized products preferred)
• Strong CAD skills (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar)
• Proficiency in FEA tools (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation)
• Hands-on prototyping background and experience building functional mechanical systems
• Expertise in thermal analysis and simulation (CFD, thermal modeling tools)
• Experience with vibration, shock, or environmental qualification testing
• Solid understanding of stress analysis, materials science, and manufacturing processes
• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline

Nice to Have

• Experience with environmental chambers or vacuum testing
• Familiarity with laser safety standards and optical/mechanical alignment
• Background in EMI/EMC shielding and rugged electronics packaging
• ITAR experience or eligibility for U.S. security clearance
